Year 3 Local Area Walk
To link with our History topic on our local area, we went on an interesting walk to observe a range of listed buildings. First, we compared Gillespie School to ours and pointed out the noticeable features of the building. We walked on to the original Highbury stadium and discussed how the original stadium and stands has been incorporated into the apartments. Our next stop was the Highbury clock tower dating from 1897. The clock tower was donated by Alfred Hutchinson to the Islington Vestry in honour of Queen Victoria’s diamond jubilee. Finally, we walked to Highbury Crescent to look at the Grade II listed houses and railings build c.1789. We noticed and discussed significant features such as the decorative fanlight and panelled doors of original design.
The children used this information back in class to draw a significant local building and record key facts. We all enjoyed the walk and the opportunity to notice even more about our fascinating local area.
